Lets Build a Tax Refund By Giving

Peak Disclosure - Click Here Please

We make a living by what we get, but make a life by what we give.

-Winston Churchill

I came across this quote while reading my Habitat for Humanity newsletter yesterday.

Great organization, I have many fond memories of the people there, the history that I have shared with many, I remember Valerie Kines, Second Cup, Rotary times with her , climbing with David & Becky raising funds with them ( 15,000 + for our Everest Base Camp adventure which ended by earthquake)  with Dreams Mountain Foundations Alumni, at the events we held , Kim Rice and her husband promoting the local events for us, Gerry and his wife, and all the little trips and finds at the store,  good stuff to warm my heart.   https://dreammountains.com/dreamteam/

Since 2009, the Dream Mountains Foundation and its climbers have raised:  $1,287,723

SOS Children’s Villages: $204,680
Ride For Dad: $144,891
ONFE / Ottawa School Breakfast Program: $189,423
CARE Canada: $146,107
Dreams Take Flight: $182,494
Habitat For Humanity: $186,507
Ottawa Senators Foundation: $113,732

WaterCan Foundation: $31,967
Canadian Aid for Chernobyl: $50,392
Colon Cancer Canada: $37,530

So doing a little gleaning from the email, here are some highlights

HABITAT TIDBIT

Former President Jimmy Carter, who has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity for 35 years, will be turning 95 on October 1st.
The former President and his wife Rosalynn Carter are continuing this commitment to Habitat by joining future homeowners and volunteers this fall to build 21 new homes in the Park Preserve neighborhood of Nashville. This is an amazing feat not only for someone of the former presidents age, but also for the fact that he had to undergo hip surgery this past spring after falling in his home.  The Carter's not only support Habitat at home but also abroad. In 2017 they came to Canada to help build homes for the Jimmy & Rosalynn work project.

getting closer to starting our build in Cardinal. In the next few weeks we should be posting on our website at www.habitat1000islands.org the details of when our ground breaking ceremony will take place!

World Habitat Day is on October 7 -   this is a United Nations awareness day designed to bring attention to the state of our towns and cities, and the right to adequate shelter for all. It's election time, so it's a perfect opportunity for us  to ask our candidates how they will help make safe and affordable housing a priority.

Waste Reduction Week in Canada is recognized from October 21 to 27.  Why not do your part by donating to our ReStores your gently used household, or renovation items that are still in great shape? You'll not only help support Habitat, but also save re-usable items from the landfill. Visit our website for a list of items we accept. We even take your old appliances, working or not!

TAX TIP !!!!!   when you donate something of some value it often can be appraised and a charitable tax receipt will be given, it's a great tax break, doesn't take alot of time to do and I love adding those onto a tax return. ~ Tim

Example, let's say my friend Mark decides to donate his prized load of tiles that he over bought when building his rental ( and he didn't keep his receipt, if you knew Mark you would understand) and they are worth say $1000 if he could sell them full retail ( they are in good shape)  and if HFH decides that they can sell them for say 50% less, so $500, he would get a tax receipt for the now Fair Market Value of $500 and on his taxes he would get an extra refund of $232 with that one decision. That would almost pay many peoples tax bill from me for a couple years, basically taxes are done for free with a little thinking and generosity. Now if one of us could do this everyday for a year 232*365 = 84,680 in tax savings in our little group, one a day and the charity now has $182,500 in potential sales (to build a house for a young family) ,  $365,000 in goods at retail value, and if it was all tiles, now we are just getting crazy.  Neat Impact , think about that and do it   .... another example would be to donate your old car, get a $500 receipt, same principal, donate a beautiful kitchen table and chairs, you don't need it any more, or you inheritated from your aunts estate, or the kid doesn't need the whatever anymore as they are heading west and no room in the plane and you paid good money for it, bring it in.

Using Art For Peace

Creating peace through art
Rotary member and former Rotaractor Yesenia Uribe is promoting peace in a creative way. After participating in a Positive Peace workshop through Rotary’s partnership with the Institute for Economics and Peace, she began painting peace murals in her community of Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. Uribe worked with her fellow Rotaractors and community members to reclaim abandoned or vandalized public spaces. Using peace-related messages, they sought to transform them into safe environments where people can connect through art.

Your gift to The Rotary Foundation helps projects like this build peace in communities around the world. Celebrate the International Day of Peace on 21 September by donating today.

Now the rest of the story .....

I came across this article promoting art as a way to promote peace.  W have lots of artists in our area and we have had the priveage to help them over the years.  Some current projects that come to mind is the new art supply store on King Street in the former Home Hardware Store that Mr. Billings ran for decades.

Hummus

I came across this delicous looking receipe for Beet Hummus this morning on one of my newsletters. It looked so good I printed and saved here and am starting my post on Hummus. Hummus is something we have in our diet very regularly, typically we make it on the ranch from chick peas.  So I will endvor to expand on this when I can. In the mean time try this out.  :)

Tim

https://atfortyfive.com/colorful-tasty-beet-hummus/

Collective Dictionary Defined

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hummus

Hummus (/ˈhʊməs//ˈhʌməs/;[1][2] Arabicحُمُّص‎, 'chickpeas'; full Arabic name: ḥummuṣ bi-ṭaḥini Arabicحمص بالطحينة‎, 'chickpeas in tahini') is a Levantine dip or spread made from cooked, mashed chickpeas or other beans, blended with tahiniolive oil, lemon juice, salt, and garlic.[3] It is popular in the Middle East and Mediterranean, as well as in Middle Eastern cuisine around the globe. It can also be found in most grocery stores in North America and Europe.

Nutrition

Chickpeas, the main ingredient of conventional hummus, have appreciable amounts of dietary fiberproteinvitamin B6manganese and other nutrients.[28]

As hummus recipes vary, so does nutritional content, depending primarily on the relative proportions of chickpeas, tahini, and water. Hummus provides roughly 170 calories for 100 grams, and is a good to excellent (more than 10% of the Daily Value) source of dietary fiber, vitamin B6, and several dietary minerals.[29][30]

Fat content, mostly from tahini and olive oil, is about 14% of the total; other major components are 65% water, 17% total carbohydrates, including a small amount of sugar, and about 10% protein.[29][30]

A great treat that I have come to enjoy, is breaking a piece of kale off the stalk and rolling it up and then dipping that in to the hummus and eating like that, a great way to ingest the Kale!

By Tim Herrera

from the New York Times email went to me today

If you’re fortunate enough to have Labor Day off from work, the most important thing on your to-do list today is to actually take the day off. Studies have shown that people send only 40 percent less emailon holiday Mondays compared with regular Mondays. (Thank you, smartphones and tablets.) Not only that, but taking time to let your brain rest and recover “literally makes us more creative, better at problem-solving, better at coming up with creative ideas.”

So, great, we’re all out of work mode and ready to enjoy the day. But what to do? Here are a few suggestions on how best to spend your day off.

Yes, yes, you’re busy, I’m busy, we’re busy-ing ourselves to exhaustion. But if you have today off, take a conscious stand against all this busyness. Being busy — if we even are busy — is rarely the status indicator we’ve come to believe it is. Nonetheless, the impact is real, and instances of burnout, anxiety disorders and stress-related diseases are on the rise. Read more »

What does holding onto grudges really get us, aside from amusing anecdotes at parties? And what could we gain from giving them up? As it turns out, quite a lot: A 2006 study suggested that “skills-based forgiveness training may prove effective in reducing anger as a coping style, reducing perceived stress and physical health symptoms, and thereby may help reduce” the stress we put on our immune and cardiovascular systems. So, you know, maybe it’s worth it. Read more »

Vacation Devotion

Labor
“We beseech you, brethren, that ye increase more and more; And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; that ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing.” (1 Thessalonians 4:10-12)

On Labor Day, we traditionally take time to recognize the great workforce here in America. From factories to restaurants, from typing pools to machine shops, from schoolrooms to gas stations, laborers help make the economy run, and on this day America honors its workforce.

The Bible likewise frequently commends those who work. For example: “Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth” (Ephesians 4:28).

Several of the words in our text are significant. The verbs “increase . . . study . . . be . . . do . . . work . . . walk . . . lack” are all in the tense implying a habit, or lifestyle. We are thus commended to have a mindset of work, not laziness or expecting others to do for us what we can do for ourselves.

The word “honestly” elsewhere is translated “decently” or “properly” and is emphasized in the Greek. There is a proper way to walk.

Perhaps Paul was referring to his own example: “For ye remember, brethren, our labor and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you” (1 Thessalonians 2:9).

Note that an admonition to continue in “brotherly love” (v. 9) is the context of our text. For one who refuses to work and becomes a burden to society exhibits a lack of brotherly love and is a reproach to the community of Christ.

Laborers are honored in Scripture, and so is labor. JDM

Today is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers1.  This great nation was build by it's workers.  We are a nation of builders, a nation of doers.  And that is cause for celebration!

"He who works with his hands is a laborer.
He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman.
He who works with his hands and his head and his heart is an artist."

~ Francis of Assisi ~

Can’t handle the day off, apparently, Staples is celebrating by being open, that is so kind of them !

A Little Entertainment

I have been reading a few posts from various investment  managers about how Disney has been ramping up for a distribution model for their movies on line and how that will improve their value. Came across this article this morning and felt it is worth sharing, gives us some perspective about the new service. As a Netflix subscriber, I can see this playing out, check it out.

Tim

Why Families Will Ditch Netflix By 2020

Having too many streaming services just won't be practical anymore.

www.fatherly.com/play/why-families-will-ditch-netflix-by-2020

On Tuesday, the highly-anticipated streaming service Disney+ revealed a new streaming bundle consisting of  Disney+, Hulu and ESPN. This will cost $12.99 a month, which is the exact same price as the standard HD two-screen plan for Netflix right now. Right there, families who are planning on getting Disney+ can do the math. With Disney+ you get the entire vault of Disney animated movies streaming, plus a smattering of Marvel movies, Star Wars movies, and yeah, that new Star Wars TV show — The Mandalorian — that starts streaming on November 12. (This show is being run by Jon Favreau by the way, you know the guy who directed the first Iron Man? Anyway, I digress. You get it. This streaming service is big.)

ESG - SRI August Reflections

https://advisoranalyst.com/2019/08/12/does-sustainable-investing-constrain-a-portfolio.html/

Came across this article in my email box this morning

"Sustainable investing is often misunderstood. Many investors think a sustainable agenda limits a portfolio to a narrow piece of the market. In fact, plenty of stocks can help investors create social benefits while generating strong returns—if you know how to find them."

and I was reminded why I like them ESG and SRI in our client portfolio's .

ESG = Envirnomental , Social,  Goverence

SRI = Socially Responsible Investments

https://www.riacanada.ca/responsible-investment/

What is Responsible Investment?

Responsible investment (RI) refers to the incorporation of environmental, social and governance factors (ESG) into the selection and management of investments.

RI has boomed in recent years as investors have recognized the opportunity for better risk-adjusted returns, while at the same time, contributing to important social and environmental issues.

Well, today we got an update on CRA timelines for adjustments, agent say's " We don't give out deadlines anymore as we are unable to respect them"  .... So ....  waiting for an adjustment to process is an unknown once again. It has been our experience, if you owe money, they will get right on it, if you are getting a refund, they have no idea.

Have a wonderful day!

Ontario Renovates Program

https://www.leedsgrenville.com/en/services/ontario-renovates-program.aspx

Here is a link to a program that maybe of interest to seniors or those with a disabilty , with family incomes under 60,000 and assets under 20,000 ( excluding home valued under 225,000 )

This looks like a good option for many that need to get some of these items taken care of. Feel free to share this info with others that may benefit as well.

Thanks

Tim Ross

Program Overview

The Ontario Renovates Program is offered as part of the Investment in Affordable Housing for Ontario (IAH 2014 Extension) Program funded by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MMAH), and provides financial assistance to households in need to repair deficiencies in affordable ownership properties. Funding is provided in the form of a 10 year, interest-free forgivable loan based on the cost of approved home repairs up to $15,000, and subject to the availability of program funds. A mortgage will be registered against the owner’s property for the duration of the loan forgiveness period for approved funding exceeding $7,000. The Counties will discharge the mortgage at the end of the loan forgiveness period (i.e. 10 years) at the Counties’ expense. In the event of default under the terms of the Promissory Note Agreement, the applicant/owner(s) shall be solely responsible to discharge the mortgage on the property at his/her expense. To support independent living for seniors and persons with disabilities, funding for accessibility repairs approved to a maximum of $5,000 is in the form of a grant, and does not require repayment.
