If you’re fortunate enough to have Labor Day off from work, the most important thing on your to-do list today is to actually take the day off. Studies have shown that people send only 40 percent less emailon holiday Mondays compared with regular Mondays. (Thank you, smartphones and tablets.) Not only that, but taking time to let your brain rest and recover “literally makes us more creative, better at problem-solving, better at coming up with creative ideas.” |
So, great, we’re all out of work mode and ready to enjoy the day. But what to do? Here are a few suggestions on how best to spend your day off. |
Yes, yes, you’re busy, I’m busy, we’re busy-ing ourselves to exhaustion. But if you have today off, take a conscious stand against all this busyness. Being busy — if we even are busy — is rarely the status indicator we’ve come to believe it is. Nonetheless, the impact is real, and instances of burnout, anxiety disorders and stress-related diseases are on the rise. Read more » |
What does holding onto grudges really get us, aside from amusing anecdotes at parties? And what could we gain from giving them up? As it turns out, quite a lot: A 2006 study suggested that “skills-based forgiveness training may prove effective in reducing anger as a coping style, reducing perceived stress and physical health symptoms, and thereby may help reduce” the stress we put on our immune and cardiovascular systems. So, you know, maybe it’s worth it. Read more » |

Labor
“We beseech you, brethren, that ye increase more and more; And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; that ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing.” (1 Thessalonians 4:10-12)
On Labor Day, we traditionally take time to recognize the great workforce here in America. From factories to restaurants, from typing pools to machine shops, from schoolrooms to gas stations, laborers help make the economy run, and on this day America honors its workforce.
The Bible likewise frequently commends those who work. For example: “Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth” (Ephesians 4:28).
Several of the words in our text are significant. The verbs “increase . . . study . . . be . . . do . . . work . . . walk . . . lack” are all in the tense implying a habit, or lifestyle. We are thus commended to have a mindset of work, not laziness or expecting others to do for us what we can do for ourselves.
The word “honestly” elsewhere is translated “decently” or “properly” and is emphasized in the Greek. There is a proper way to walk.
Perhaps Paul was referring to his own example: “For ye remember, brethren, our labor and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you” (1 Thessalonians 2:9).
Note that an admonition to continue in “brotherly love” (v. 9) is the context of our text. For one who refuses to work and becomes a burden to society exhibits a lack of brotherly love and is a reproach to the community of Christ.
Laborers are honored in Scripture, and so is labor. JDM
He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman.
He who works with his hands and his head and his heart is an artist."
Kids can’t stay off their phones, and Yondr is reaping the benefitsWhat was the world like before smartphones? Definitely don’t ask a teenager. Chances are they have no idea. A report from Pew Research Center shows that 95% of all teens currently have access to or own a smartphone, and 45% are online pretty much 24/7. Phone addiction has pushed many schools to enforce policies regulating usage during school hours. But, as we all know, it takes a little more than the iron fist of Miss Trunchbull to get kids to look up from their phones -- and recently, schools have decided to explore more drastic measures. This year, The Guardianreports, more than 1k schools nationwide will be using Yondr, a magnetized pouch system that locks students away from their phones while class is in sesh. Schoooools back... from... summerMusicians and standup comics have used Yondr to keep people present at their gigs since the San Francisco-based company launched in 2014. But, in recent years, more and more schools have used the pouches to lock out students during school hours. And, while reviews are mixed -- from students and teachers alike -- there’s proof that it works. Of course, kids aren’t going to give up easilySome schools using Yondr have seen a decrease in phone use and an increase in person to person connectivity. Yet, students, the rascals that they are, have also figured out ways to hack the pouch. Still, according to Yondr spokeswoman Kelly Taylor, “Demand has tripled this year.” |
