  • Original text noted below and my comment that got me tearing up a bit ...

My dad was an educator most of his life, earning his PhD later in life, then becoming a later age entrepreneur. He created the worlds first self-paced learning software because he was driven to help others succeed. He was a true visionary in the field of education and was passionate in his belief that people learn in their own ways, and at their own speed, and that technology could enable and reflect that pace. This was at a time when main frame computers were the norm and desktops were just a thought of the future. He believed that the conformity in schools, created to serve the average student, led to the failure of the systems ability to help realize the potential in every student.

I have found myself missing my dad enormously these past few months. He always knew what to say and often would help me when I was struggling with decisions by encouraging me to believe in myself and to focus on doing the right thing. He was an incredibly intelligent and empathetic man who gave his last hard earned dollars away to help everyone around him - even when he was sick and dealing with cancer.

To him every moment of every day was a chance to learn, be curious and be kind. He’s on my mind today as I reflect on my own personal growth, being all I can be, trying to always be better tomorrow than I am today, and learning in my own way. I’m grateful for everything he taught me but most of all for his belief in me and helping me think for myself.

He would hope for the good folks on LinkedIn to be less judgemental and to go easier on each other and harder on the issues. Most of all he would be encouraging. His basic principles were:

    Be kind
    Read
    Learn
    Think
    Be curious
    Believe in yourself
    Form your own opinions

Thank you for sharing this wonderful reflection, we all should pause and reflect and let our eyes sweat a little in the corners as we consider those we have lost or may loose in the future , may we also embrace his basic principles. The one on being curious is often forgotten. That one opens so many doors to open and walk through and windows to look into , cheers

“Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -

And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm -

I’ve heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.

    The Active Power of Faith
“And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.” (1 Corinthians 2:4-5)

When God grants the gift of faith that enables us at the point of salvation (Ephesians 2:8), it should not be seen as a static power that merely resides in our minds but rather an empowerment that is expected to grow into a dynamic and demonstrable “divine nature” (2 Peter 1:4-9).

Faith preserves and protects us. Jesus insisted, “He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life” (John 5:24). These words are precise. Once faith is exercised, an eternal transaction takes place wherein a person is “passed” from spiritual death to eternal life. This is an absolute change and eliminates the possibility of hell (John 10:28-29).

Faith is power for effective prayer. The “mustard seed” promise in Matthew 17:20 does not refer to size or amount but to quality. The Greek comparative hoce, translated “as” in that passage, refers to the same kind of faith as the mustard seed. Just so, the promise of Matthew 7:7 (that if you ask and seek, you will find) depends on our confidence (faith) in the heavenly Father.

Faith is our “shield” against the Enemy. The seven pieces of God’s armor identified in Ephesians 6:10-18 include “the shield of faith” that provides an ability “to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked” (v. 16). That shield is defensive in the sense that it only provides protection when we use it to block the “darts.” The active use comes when we “resist the devil” (James 4:7) “in the faith” (1 Peter 5:9).

Do you use faith as God intended? HMM III

** Whatever the actual science of thought transmission may be, it is true that if you wish to receive the power contained in the thoughts of others, you must condition your mind to receive those ideas. Listening helps condition your mind to receive valuable information contained in the thoughts of others. Set aside any preconceived notions you may have about the topic, and listen attentively and nonjudgmentally to what is being said. Focus on the information, not on the speaker. Try to identify key concepts behind the speaker’s words. train your mind to identify and absorb information that others often miss because their “receivers” are not tuned to the proper frequency.
